Educational program CÉZANNE / RENOIR Capolavori dal Musée de l’Orangerie e dal Musée d’Orsay

150 years after the first exhibition of the Impressionists - held in Paris between April 15th and May 15th, 1874 - in Palazzo Reale Milano we are able to admire the works of two of the main masters of modern art, Paul Cézanne and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The exhibition - featuring masterpieces from the Musée de l'Orangerie and the Musée d'Orsay - tells the entire careers of the two artists, from their early works of the 1870s to their mature works at the beginning of the 20th century.

For the foreign visitors Ad Artem offers two different ways to visit the exhibition, giving the opportunity to choose between guided tours and visits with workshop activities. This dual approach allows for an in-depth understanding of the work of Cézanne and Renoir, and to focus with great attention on the most innovative aspects of their production.

 PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Lab tour

Young visitors will be accompanied on a journey to discover the history and work of two artists who, while sharing the same path before taking different routes, have left a mark on their own era and those to come with their new way of representing reality. From the exhibition tour, an experiential approach will be privileged: thanks to some supporting tools, participants will be able to directly grasp the gaze of Cézanne and Renoir - noting commonalities and differences - and then experiment in the laboratory with some of the observations made, playing with real objects, geometric solids, lights, and colored filters. Finally, each individual will be able to choose the artist - and therefore the style - that they feel most connected to, to engage in a personal way with the direct copying of a few simple elements. Focusing on line and color choice, participants will then attempt to translate a small still life into color, as the two artists featured in the exhibition often did... with stunning effects!

Proposal 2 | Lab tour

Students discover firsthand what made Paul Cézanne and Pierre-Auguste Renoir the "fathers of modernity." From the first steps taken by the two artists in the realm of Impressionism - to its transcendence to arrive at an even more innovative and personal style - the evolution of the work of the two painters will lead the students to ask many questions: what does it mean that shadows are colored? How do I find correspondences between everyday objects and geometric solids?

What does it mean to "know mentally" an object? Before depicting it with colors, participants will try to find the answers in the laboratory, experimenting with everyday objects, lights, photographic filters, shapes, and changes in perspective. Only after this investigation into reality, each participant will choose the artist whose style they will experiment with in the direct copying of a still life composed by the students themselves.

With the support of different bases - and a different color range for the two painters - participants will be invited to try to approach the atmosphere perceived in the works of the chosen artist, focusing on the lighter and more vibrant "touch" for Renoir, and the pastier and more constructive one for Cézanne. The choice of one or more viewpoints with which to represent objects and the space in which they are placed will help students explore another significant aspect of the vision of one artist or the other, in rendering their personal glimpse of reality.
